
Svalbard is warming faster than almost anywhere else on Earth. In Longyearbyen, thawing permafrost and increasing landslide risks have moved from scientific predictions to daily realities. LongyearObs was launched to bridge the gap between expert research and local life, turning our town into a “living laboratory” where residents and scientists work side-by-side to monitor these changes.
Science You Can See and Join
Building on the technical foundation of the PermaMeteoCommunity project, we deployed a network of 20 private weather stations throughout the Longyearbyen community. To ensure the data was research-grade, we partnered with local company Kolibri Geo Services to design custom mounting bars for town light posts. This setup ensures every station measures wind and temperature away from building interference, providing a high-quality map of Longyearbyen’s microclimate.
A Digital Window into the Arctic
To keep the community informed year-round, we developed and used two key digital tools:
● Longyearobs.com: We developed this website to explain local weather and permafrost research and included an invitation for residents to host their own weather stations in support of our research.
● Vrsvalbard.com: We added a Virtual Field Guide to this website that allows anyone to «visit» our research sites digitally, even during the harshest polar nights.
A Lasting Legacy
Through engaging the public in «Permafrost Walks,» school lectures, and hands-on student involvement, LongyearObs has fostered a more resilient and informed community. While the project has now transitioned into the broader ThawingLYR initiative, the infrastructure and collaborative spirit we built continue to help Longyearbyen navigate the challenges of a changing Arctic.
