Norsk institutt for vannforskning undersøker forekomst og fordeling av antimikrobiell resistens (bakterier, virus, sopp) i akvatiske miljøer på Svalbard

 

The project investigates the presence and distribution of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in aquatic environments in Svalbard. Two sampling campaigns were carried out, covering a broad set of water
types. Samples were collected from marine environments (Adventfjord, Isfjord, and Dicksonfjord), freshwater site (Adventelva), drinking water sources, and both untreated and mechanically treated
wastewater from Longyearbyen.

 

Multi‑step analytical approach to AMR detection:

A structured workflow was developed to process and analyse the collected samples. Water samples underwent filtration and pre‑concentration followed by DNA extraction. These extracts were analysed
for antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) by SmartChip RT-qPCR and antibiotic‑resistant bacteria (ARB) by culturing approach. The results provide insight into the occurrence and distribution of AMR
markers across Svalbard’s aquatic systems.

 

Establishing a baseline for future monitoring:

Preliminary findings indicate that ARGs are detectable in nearly all sampled environments, with the highest levels observed in wastewater, consistent with the current observations elsewhere. ARGs
were also detected in marine and freshwater samples, though generally at lower concentrations. Samples from locations with limited human activity appear to contain lower ARG levels and diversity,
contributing to a valuable baseline against which future monitoring and management measures can be compared.

 

Supporting future environmental management:
The dataset generated offers initial indication of how local sources, including wastewater inputs, may influence AMR patterns in Svalbard’s waters. The results are expected to improve understanding of
AMR occurrence in Arctic environments and support future environmental assessments.
