Together, we preserve Svalbard’s natural environment

The purpose of Svalbard Environmental Protection Fund is to conserve and protect the rich natural environment and cultural heritage on the Svalbard islands.

How the fund is used

Projects that somehow aim to conserve Svalbard’s environment may receive support from Svalbard Environmental Protection Fund. This includes informational and educational projects, mapping or examination of current environmental conditions, or maintenance and conservation of cultural heritage.

The Svalbard reindeer were almost extinct at the beginning of the 20th century and wasn't protected until it was almost too late. Today the stack is back to full, and the archipelago is now home to roughly 22.000 reindeer. Photo: Tommy Dahl Markussen
